China's film market has been brimming with activity and emotion amid the country's five-day Labor Day break. According to the data from Beacon Pro, a leading movie analytics platform, the total box office revenue of films screening in cinemas during the holiday period – including re-releases and advance screenings – had surpassed 300 million yuan (approximately $41.25 million) by 2 p.m. on May 2.
Based on the current box office rankings, films that focus on the struggles of ordinary people resonate strongly with audiences – for example, "The Dumpling Queen," which currently holds the top spot with over 97 million yuan.
The film turns its lens on everyday lives, using delicate storytelling and heartfelt emotion to capture the beauty and complexity of ordinary experiences – striking a deep chord with viewers.
Directed by Andrew Lau, "The Dumpling Queen" is inspired by a true story and paints a vivid portrait of grit and perseverance. Starring Ma Li, Kara Wai and Zhu Yawen, the film follows a single mother who moves to a new city and, through sheer determination and skill, builds a dumpling stall into a household brand.
More than just a tale of personal struggle, the film speaks to the broader challenges faced by countless workers striving to survive and find dignity in a rapidly changing society.
According to Beacon Pro, "The Dumpling Queen" is expected to lead the May Day box office, with earnings projected to exceed 300 million yuan. Though reviews are mixed, many viewers found the film deeply moving. For some, it was a reminder of home, family and the simple comfort of a warm dumpling – “the kind of film that makes you want to call your mom.”
A highly upvoted comment on China's movie rating platform Douban reads: "Rather than calling it a story of a strong female lead, I'd say it's a grand ensemble – Dumpling Queen isn't just the heroine's own crown, but one jointly bestowed by the kindness and resilience of everyday people."
